Challenge

Bisio Progetti, a company specializing in the production of coffee and beverage capsules, required an advanced intralogistics handling system. The goal was to ensure operational continuity, integrate Industry 4.0 technologies, and optimize the production flow in terms of efficiency and safety.

Solution

LCS developed an intelligent handling system based on Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs), ensuring operational continuity and seamless integration with Industry 4.0 technologies.
  • Implementation of a fleet of 7 Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) based on Omron technology.
  • Introduction of automated roller conveyors for box transportation between the forming, filling, and sealing machines.
  • Intelligent fleet management through LCS’s LogiCon software, interfaced with the MES to optimize missions and routes.
  • Automated charging system: robots autonomously manage battery swapping to ensure continuous operation (8-hour autonomy).

Key technical data

  • Maximum Capacity: 210 boxes per hour.
  • Autonomous navigation with AI and laser sensors to avoid obstacles and optimize routes.
  • Centralized mission assignment system, prioritizing requests based on urgency and availability.

Bisio Progetti, an Italian company based in Alessandria and part of the Guala Group, has embarked on an ambitious digital transformation journey aligned with Industry 4.0 principles, leveraging advanced automation to enhance the efficiency of its internal processes.

Specialized in the production of coffee capsules and beverage packaging, the company has experienced significant growth in demand in recent years. This surge has made it essential to rethink and strengthen internal logistics flows to ensure production continuity, faster order handling, and high levels of safety and traceability.

In this context, Bisio Progetti partnered with LCS to develop a customized solution based on Autonomous Mobile Robotics (AMR). The project, implemented with the technological support of Omron, introduced a fleet of seven AMRs designed to automate box transportation within the production facility in a flexible, intelligent, and fully autonomous manner.

The new robotic infrastructure manages a continuous flow of up to 210 boxes per hour, optimizing two critical phases of the production process:

  • Distribution of empty cartons to filling machines
  • Transfer of filled boxes to the closing and packaging area

Each AMR is equipped with integrated motorized rollers, enabling fully autonomous loading and unloading without human intervention. Thanks to advanced laser sensors, 3D cameras, and real-time navigation software, the robots calculate the most efficient routes, avoid obstacles, and interact safely with both the environment and operators.

This results in significant time and cost savings, along with a marked improvement in workplace safety, reducing the risk of accidents in handling zones.

The fleet is designed to operate 24/7, with each AMR capable of monitoring its battery level and autonomously navigating to the charging station when needed, without disrupting production flow.

The entire system is orchestrated by LogiCon, LCS’s intelligent management software, which communicates directly with the company’s MES (Manufacturing Execution System). This integration enables dynamic task distribution based on order priority, production progress, and robot availability, maximizing plant productivity and improving responsiveness to demand fluctuations.

By adopting this technology, Bisio Progetti has made a qualitative leap in internal logistics management, shifting from a rigid, linear model to a flexible, scalable, and highly automated system.

The results were immediate:

  • Reduced errors
  • Increased production capacity
  • Improved delivery reliability
  • Enhanced ergonomic conditions for operators

This project is a clear example of how well-planned and integrated digital innovation can generate real and lasting value, even in high-intensity production environments like food packaging, reinforcing the company’s market position and preparing it to meet future global industry challenges.
